Djuric meets with Head of UNMIK on the position of the Serbian people in Kosovo
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Djuric, met today with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMIK, Peter Due, to discuss the current security and political situation in Kosovo, as well as the position of the Serbian people.
Djuric emphasized that the Republic of Serbia attaches great importance to the work of UNMIK and underlined that, for Serbia, it is of particular importance to preserve the continuity and frequency of United Nations Security Council sessions on UNMIK in an open format, so that the broader international public can be objectively informed about the security-sensitive situation and the position of the Serbian and other non-Albanian communities in Kosovo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Serbia stated.
According to him, Serbia expects that UNMIK, in addition to effectively implementing its mandate on the ground, will in the next report of the UN Secretary-General objectively and on the basis of facts highlight the alarming position of the Serbian and other non-majority communities.
“Djuric noted that the solution reached regarding the implementation of the Law on Foreigners, within the framework of the European Union, Belgrade and Pristina, prevented the worst-case scenario, emphasizing that such an outcome had been anticipated. As he pointed out, this solution has preserved the institutions of healthcare and education, which represent the backbone of the survival of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija and the foundation of the future Community of Serb-majority Municipalities,” the statement reads.
At the same time, he pointed to numerous examples of institutional violence, as well as to continuous and “increasingly frequent unilateral actions by the provisional institutions in Pristina directed against the Serbs.”
“Djuric concluded that the presence of the United Nations Mission in Kosovo and Metohija is of utmost importance for the preservation of peace, stability, and security in the Province, and stressed that Belgrade will continue to provide all forms of support to UNMIK that may contribute to improving the overall situation in Kosovo and Metohija,” the statement concludes.
