Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Djuric met today with the new head of UNMIK, Peter Due, to whom he conveyed that the international community must ensure all rights and full security for Serbs in order to prevent their expulsion from Kosovo caused by unilateral moves by the authorities in Pristina, and that it is important to maintain the continuity and momentum of United Nations Security Council sessions on UNMIK in an open format.

Wishing his interlocutor success in performing this important role, Djuric pointed out that the imperative for action by the international community should be the preservation of Kosovo’s multiethnic character, which, as he noted, has unfortunately been called into question by constant and increasing pressure on Serbs.

Djuric stressed that Serbia attaches exceptional importance to the work of UNMIK, emphasizing that it is crucial to continue the mission’s engagement with the aim of consistent implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244.

The head of Serbian diplomacy expressed the expectation that the practice of regular and substantive communication on all issues of importance for UNMIK’s activities in Kosovo will continue.

Informing his interlocutor about the latest moves by the authorities in Pristina, Djuric expressed serious concern about the situation in Kosovo and once again pointed out that UNMIK must remain engaged on all issues of importance, without reduction and with an unchanged mandate.

Djuric reiterated that Serbia expects the international community to ensure all rights and full security for Serbs in order to prevent their expulsion from Kosovo caused by unilateral moves by the authorities in Pristina.

The minister underscored that it is of great importance for Serbia to maintain the continuity and momentum of United Nations Security Council sessions on UNMIK in an open format, so that the public can be timely and adequately informed about the security-sensitive situation in Kosovo.
