Feith: The US is losing patience with Kosovo due to insufficient progress in the dialogue
The former EU Special Representative in Kosovo, Pieter Feith, believes that Pristina will lose the most from the lack of progress in the dialogue with Serbia and adds that the US is losing patience with Kosovo because it is not progressing enough.
Feith says for Teve1 that the Ohrid Agreement is of great importance for Pristina because it would pave the way for Kosovo's membership in international organizations.
"It's a shame that there is no political will on either side for further progress, but I think that Kosovo will suffer the consequences more. If the parties take seriously the agreement reached in Ohrid, then things would move forward and that would help Kosovo become a member of various international organizations as well as the United Nations," Feith said.
The Dutch diplomat says that the United States of America is losing patience with Kosovo because it is not making enough progress and points out that the US has never had such a critical approach to Kosovo before, which, according to him, is worrying.
"I see that the United States of America has a critical attitude towards the government of Kosovo, and this is unprecedented. It seems clear that the Biden administration is losing patience with Kosovo, due to slow progress. I have not seen such a critical attitude of the USA toward Kosovo since it declared independence in 2008. It would be a real tragedy for Kosovo if it loses the support of the United States," he said.
Feith also has some suggestions for the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and says that Kosovo should understand that a fierce war is being waged in Europe, which is the focus of world capitals.
"That's why you have to remember that things are not like before and you can't count on the sympathy and support you once had," he adds.
He does not think that the USA and the EU are supporting the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, in that process.
"I know it's not easy, but I suggest to Prime Minister Kurti to put more effort into the dialogue with the Serbs in the north of Kosovo instead of sending special units there," Feith adds.
