The KFOR mission has no authority to decide on the possible opening of the main Ibar Bridge in Mitrovica to traffic, as the matter falls within the competence of the relevant institutions in Kosovo and the EU, the NATO-led mission said today.

“KFOR has no authority to decide whether the Ibar Bridge should be opened to motor vehicle traffic. Any potential opening is a separate matter that falls within the competence of the relevant institutions in Kosovo and the EU and is not a consequence of any change in KFOR’s position,” a spokesperson told the Gazeta Express portal.

Regarding the possibility of changes to KFOR’s permanent presence at the Ibar Bridge, the mission said this was part of a broader process of optimizing its military posture in Kosovo, reflecting the improved security situation.

KFOR stressed that the process could be reversed in the event of any developments that could have implications for long-term security and regional stability.

“The gradual transition from KFOR’s permanent presence on the Ibar Bridge is part of a broader optimization process and reflects the improved security situation. This process is gradual, conditions-based and reversible should developments that could affect long-term security in Kosovo and regional stability require it. The process is subject to regular assessments on the ground,” the spokesperson added.

The response further stated that KFOR maintains a continuous, adaptable presence on the northern side of the bridge, as well as a dynamic presence in both North and South Mitrovica and throughout northern Kosovo.

“This flexible approach, which includes both a visible and mobile presence, will enable us to remain best positioned to contribute to local security for the benefit of all communities. Our personnel remain ready to respond to any relevant security developments, in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and EULEX, in accordance with their respective roles as security actors and in line with KFOR’s longstanding United Nations mandate,” the KFOR spokesperson concluded.
