The Special Prosecution Office of Kosovo has confirmed to Kosovapress that it has launched an investigation into the construction process of two new bridges over the Ibar River. According to the office, the investigation is part of a broader probe into contracts awarded through negotiated procedures without prior public notice. It is not directed against the project itself, but rather aims to ensure compliance with legal obligations, protection of the public interest, and the rule of law.

Last week, the Government of Kosovo began construction on two new bridges over the Ibar River, which connects the southern, predominantly Albanian part of Mitrovica with the northern part, predominantly inhabited by Serbs.

The contract for the construction of the bridges was awarded through a negotiated tender, but caretaker Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that all applicable laws had been followed.

In response to Kosovapress, Special Prosecution spokesperson Arbenora Luta said that the Kosovo Police had been instructed to carry out all necessary investigative actions to establish the facts regarding any suspicions related to the case.

"The Special Prosecution is not responsible for evaluating or approving infrastructure projects, but we emphasize that the role of the Prosecution is to act in accordance with applicable laws in cases where there is suspicion of misuse of public funds," Luta stated.

She added that the Special Prosecution, through five assigned prosecutors, is currently handling nearly 2,000 cases related to contracts awarded without open competition.

Based on this, Luta said, the Prosecution has authorized the Kosovo Police to conduct the necessary investigative actions to properly establish the facts of the case, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code.

"This investigation is not targeting the project itself, but is aimed at fulfilling legal obligations, safeguarding the public interest, and upholding the rule of law, to ensure the lawful and responsible use of public resources," Luta concluded.
