Mijacic called on the Quint and the EU: Do not allow Albin Kurti to start a new war in Kosovo
The coordinator of the National Convention on the EU, Dragisa Mijacic, told the leaders of the Quint countries and the EU that the Prime Minister of Kosovo was intensifying terror against the Serbs in the north of Kosovo, warned them that this was the last wake-up call and called on them to react immediately and not to allow Albin Kurti to start a new war on Kosovo.
In a post on Twitter, Mijacic stated that in the week when Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani had spoken in the European Parliament about democracy, equality, and human rights, the Kosovo Police had brutally beaten two Serbian teenagers, a 15-year-old boy, and a 17-year-old girl.
He also published the testimony of their mother Marija Radosavljevic for Kosovo Online:
"Here's their mother's testimony, it's in Serbian, but you can feel her pain," Mijacic said, along with a recording of the poignant address of the mother of the beaten children.
He added that two teenagers had been riding a quad bike in remote mountainous areas in the north of Kosovo when they had been stopped and severely beaten by the Kosovo Police. He added that they were hospitalized in North Mitrovica, and that "the Kosovo Police shamelessly denied their involvement in the incident, as they did many times in the past."
“This is one of many incidents of atrocities and Kosovo police brutality that happens on almost a daily level in northern Kosovo. There were many cases of the shooting of civilians by the police, beating and mistreating Serbian citizens. North Kosovo was turned into a military zone!” Among others, yesterday a heavily armed Kosovo Police came to a private celebration in Zvecan and gave an order for all guests to go home. Later in the evening, they were patrolling Zvecan in military formations, unofficially introducing Martial Law in Serb-dominated areas,” Mijacic says.
He recalled that at the beginning of June, a group of Serbian intellectuals from Kosovo published a statement in which they had publicly appealed to the EU and the Quint to preserve peace in the north of Kosovo. The first sentence of the announcement reads:
"We are deeply concerned about the repressive and aggressive measures taken by the Kosovo government and the behavior of Special Police Forces in the north that has the potential to escalate to unfathomable consequences for citizens’ peace and security"
Mijacic warns that since then the situation in the north is rapidly deteriorating, coming close to a level that there will be no turning point. The number of incidents is mushrooming, not only towards civilians yet towards journalists as well. There's a need for immediate action until it is not too late
"This is another wake-up call to the international community for a rapid response and a bold reaction, especially to High EU Representative Josep Borrell, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Do not allow Albin Kurti to start a new war in Kosovo," Mijacic appealed.
