Dusan Borisavljevic of the Youth Council of the Municipality of Gracanica said that young people from Kosovo most often choose the Adriatic coast for seasonal employment, with one of the main motivations being the opportunity to spend three months by the sea while earning a decent income.

“Once the school year or the academic year ends, many young people head to Montenegro or Croatia, where they work for two to three months in order to earn money. For young people, however, it is not always just about the money. Spending time on the coast is a unique experience and an opportunity to try something new. Many also go for the social life and entertainment. They get to spend three months living by the sea while earning enough money to support themselves for about six months back in Kosovo,” Borisavljevic told Kosovo Online.

Speaking about Gracanica in particular, he said that the situation is similar, although older residents are more likely to take seasonal agricultural jobs, which generally do not provide significant earnings.

“The Municipality of Gracanica remains predominantly rural. We have many seasonal jobs related to farming and agricultural work in the surrounding fields. Those who take seasonal work usually do so on their own land or on the farms of relatives. However, these jobs do not generate substantial income, especially not for young people. Younger people generally prefer to go to Montenegro or Croatia to work seasonal jobs on the Adriatic coast,” Borisavljevic said.

Among them, he noted, are musicians, DJs, as well as young people employed in the hospitality and service sectors.

“These are mostly young people who have either completed university or have just finished high school and are preparing to enroll in university. They go to earn money, which they later use to finance their studies or to buy something for themselves,” Borisavljevic added.
