On this day, 24 years ago today, 14 Serb harvesters were killed in Staro Gracko; no one was held accountable for the crime
In the village of Staro Gracko near Lipjan, today will be marked 24 years since the murder of 14 Serb harvesters, one of the most serious crimes against the Serbs since the arrival of the international mission in Kosovo, which, like many others, has never been solved.
The crime took place on July 23, 1999, when 14 Serbs from Staro Gracko were killed in an ambush in a field, among them four members of the Janjicijevic family - Slobodan, Mile, Momir, and the youngest minor, Novica (17).
The rifle fire ended the lives of the brothers Jovica and Rade Zivic, Stanimir and Bosko Djekic, Sasa, and Ljubisa Cvejic, as well as Andrija Odalovic, Nikola Stojanovic, Miodrag Tepsic and Milovan Jovanovic.
The commemoration of the 24th anniversary of the murders in Staro Gacko will begin at 10 a.m. and will be officiated by Bishop Teodosije of Raska and Prizren.
Eight years after the crime, UNMIK arrested Mazllum Bytyqi from the nearby village of Veliki Alas on suspicion of having participated in the murders, who was released from custody two months later due to lack of evidence.
The Special Prosecutor's Office in Pristina, together with EULEX, suspended the investigation into one of the most serious crimes against the Serbs in Kosovo six years ago.
The cemetery in Staro Gracko, where the martyred Serb harvesters were buried, was repeatedly desecrated and mined.
