At the monument to fallen heroes in Leposavic, 24 years since the start of the NATO bombing were marked today, and after the funeral service, wreaths were laid on the memorial by family members, war veterans, the municipal council, the assistant director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Jelena Stojkovic and the president of the Provisional Authority of the municipality Leposavic, Zoran Todic.
Apart from the memorial for the 24 victims in Leposavic, in front of which the youngest unfurled the banner "Remembrance of the victims of NATO aggression", wreaths were also laid in the local communities of Lesak and Socanica.
Assistant Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, Jelena Stojkovic, said that the state of Serbia would always be with its people and would never forget the victims and suffering.
"Today, throughout the country, in a dignified way, we are all commemorating this date of the great suffering of the Serbs together. Many people, infrastructure, health and school institutions, media outlets, and monuments have suffered. Serbia is still recovering from that, even though much has been rebuilt and upgraded. This caused great damage, and a great scar and we are not a nation that forgets, we remember our victims. We are here today to mark and to remember all our victims who fought for the liberation of our homeland and for all the victims who fell for the freedom of our people," Stojkovic told Kosovo Online.
The President of the Provisional Authority of the Municipality of Leposavic, Zoran Todic, stated that it was important to convey to young people what kind of forces their ancestors - Serbian heroes – had fought against.
"Today, with this gathering, we want to say that we have not forgotten and must not forget the sacrifices and sufferings of the Serbs in 1999. We have a great responsibility to keep it from being forgotten and, above all, to show the young generations to come, what kind of forces they fought against our heroes," Todic told Kosovo Online.
Todic added that it was up to the Serbs to ensure that such suffering did not happen again.
"Even today, we live in a difficult time that is full of challenges and difficulties for the Serbs who remained living in Kosovo and Metohija. We will fight and try to persevere in this fight of ours and the preservation of the Serbs in these areas. Let's try, to fight for basic human rights, for rights worthy of human life today in the 21st century. The Serbs are not a threat to anyone, they are consistent and determined to survive on their land in the holy land of Kosovo and Metohija. And of course, we fight for peace, and we are working on reconciliation, even though it is really difficult today, but it is up to us to fight so that this kind of suffering never happens to anyone again," Todic said.
