Hovenier: The US fears new tensions in the north due to the dinar ban
The United States Ambassador to Kosovo, Jeffrey Hovenier, expressed concern that Kosovo risked facing new tensions in the north due to the new regulation of the Central Bank of Kosovo, stating that the euro was the only official currency, Koha reports.
In a statement to the media after a meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti, Hovenier said that the United States was concerned and reserved about the implementation of the regulation and added that this issue 'requires more attention and dialogue'.
According to him, there is a possibility of tensions, especially among people who depend on aid coming from Serbia.
"I don't know how to avoid the frustration of citizens due to the implementation of the decision. Take, for example, a pensioner who receives financial aid. He is used to this system. I assume he went to a certain point to receive assistance. How will he get this benefit? What will happen to him? An elderly person can be shocked by this. I think there can be tension from people who will feel excluded from the assistance they depend on. No one wants such a thing," he said.
Hovenier said that the United States hoped that the Government of Kosovo would find a solution for the transition.
