Rubio: Kosovo’s NATO membership is not on the agenda of Alliance member states

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated during a hearing before the U.S. Congress that the issue of Kosovo’s membership in NATO is currently not on the agenda of the Alliance’s member states, TeVe 1 reported.

Rubio said that, while this does not rule out the possibility of future membership, the issue has not been a recent topic of discussion among NATO allies, as their focus is currently directed toward other global matters.

“Generally speaking, NATO is focused on several other issues, and enlargement, particularly in the case of Kosovo, is not at the forefront of the agenda for some member states,” Rubio said, according to TeVe 1.

Congressman Keith Self used his time during the congressional hearing with Rubio to express support for Kosovo’s NATO membership and to underscore the importance of continued U.S. engagement in the Western Balkans, RTK reported.

Referring to his recent visit to the region, Self described it as “extremely fragile” and stressed that Kosovo’s integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions remains essential for long-term regional stability.

He also welcomed the recent appointments of U.S. ambassadors in the region and emphasized the importance of appointing a U.S. ambassador to Kosovo, noting that he expects the administration’s support in filling that important position.

Congressman Self, together with Congressman Mike Lawler, recently introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives expressing strong support for Kosovo’s integration into NATO.

However, interlocutors interviewed in a Kosovo Online analysis assessed that such an initiative carries little political weight, explaining that the four NATO member states that do not recognize Kosovo remain the principal obstacle to its integration. They also noted that there is currently limited appetite for further Alliance enlargement, and that Kosovo should focus on domestic and regional issues, as well as on improving cooperation with the United States.

NATO officials have likewise stated that any further step in cooperation with Kosovo would require consensus among the Alliance’s member states.
