Xani: The Northern Ireland model would enable Serbia to have some authority where Serbs live in Kosovo

Political analyst Visar Xani assesses that different models, like Northern Ireland, cannot be adapted to the situation in Kosovo. He points out that the problems between Kosovo and Serbia are not religious, as in the case of Northern Ireland, and that this model would allow Serbia to have some authority where Serbs live and where Serbia has influence.

Models like the Irish one, Xani emphasizes, may suit the dynamics needed for the dialogue to reach a final decision, that is, an agreement that reconciles the parties, followed by a legal agreement that can be used to enter Euro-Atlantic structures.

This analyst also believes that the international factor does not support the idea of the Northern Ireland model because it differs from what has been discussed within the dialogue framework so far. According to him, the best option is the Brussels Agreement.

"There needs to be seriousness when parties take on commitments, to implement them, rather than giving space for parties to take on commitments and then not implement them later. So, the problem will be solved when Kosovo gains independence, and on the other hand, Kosovo provides Serbs with a satisfactory local government that would not influence the possibility of secession but rather a more advanced local government in terms of the local rights of the Serbian community," Xani says.
